Charity Open Meeting, 28/12/11 Laurie BowerCharity group 28-12-11.JPG (121291 bytes)

Our IOM Charity Open Meeting was held on Wednesday 28th December on a chilly and somewhat blustery day with the wind varying from 14 to 24 mph. 14 skippers from 7 clubs had entered and, after a briefing on the day’s schedule, racing commenced at 10.15am. A demanding “triangle and a sausage” course had been set as the wind was blowing straight down the lake in the most favourable SSW direction. After the first few races it became clear that the skippers to watch out for were Colin Trower and Dave Andrews both (HCMYC), closely followed by Martin Crysell (Guildford) and Mike Adams (Eastbourne) with Vernon Appleton (Coal House Fort) and Peter Popham (3 Rivers), never far behind. With only minor adjustments to the course being necessary throughout the day, a total of 15races were sailed at the end of which prizes were presented to the first 5 skippers as follows:

Place Skipper Points Score
1 Colin Trower (Hampton Court MYC) 22
2 Dave Andrews (Hampton Court MYC) 30
3 Mike Adams (Eastbourne & District MYC) 38
4 Martin Crysell (Guildford MYC) 46
5 Vernon Appleton (Coal House Fort MYC) 47
6 Peter Popham (3 Rivers RYC) 55
7 Terry Colson (Hampton Court MYC) 69
8 Colin Honour (Swanley MYC) 88
9 Keith Tyson (Eastbourne & District MYC) 92
10 Hugh McAdoo (Guildford MYC) 113
11 Ian Davies (Poole RYC) 125
12 Gordon Beddall (Hampton Court MYC) 127
13 Martin Shaw (Hampton Court MYC) 149
14 Geoff Appleton (Coal House Fort MYC) 171

We are pleased to say that, through the generosity of the skippers, race officials and others, £150 was raised for ‘Momentum’, a local Kingston based charity which aims to help children up to the age of 17 (and their families) undergoing treatment for cancer, who are living in Surrey and SW London.

On a very cold 18th December we held our IOM,Xmas cracker race. Light winds but with a few gusts to made sailing interesting. but before that the lake had to be cleared of 3mm thick ice.  cracker-rainbow.gif (239754 bytes)This was done mainly by Dave Andrews using the club boat as an ice-breaker, The broken ice then migrated the club end of the lakedriven by the wind, and sailing was possible The racing was close at times especially at the starts. Towards the end of sailing a huge black cloud headed our way accompanied by the brightest of rainbows, which allowed a splendid photo opportunity.

An enjoyable day's sailing, despite the cold, was had by all. Dave Andrews was triumphant on the day, having achieved the most wins. Photo and report from Peter Smith.

Some skippers are now using Lithium Polymer batteries. The present technology of these while giving a weight advantage, has a possible fire hazard to our club buildings. Consequently the Club Committee has decided that these batteries must not be charged on club premises.

Swans.jpg (263190 bytes)Thanks to club member David Bell, we have a Club history page on this website.

Hampton Court Model Yacht Club was formed in 1996 from an amalgamation of two very much older clubs, the Yachting Monthly 6 Metre Owners Association, and the South London Model Yacht Club. Our Club is affiliated to the MYA and is situated in Home Park, Hampton Court. See History.

We sail on the Rick pond and we have a club house and car park close to the lake. For radio sailing we race RM's, IOM's, and RA yachts, and have a very full programme for all 3 classes. We also have a developing Vane sailing group. We meet on Wednesdays and Sundays.  Club racing starts at 11.00 on Wednesdays, 10.30 on Sundays.                  There is also MM class racing every other Saturday Morning. See our Sailing Prog.   Come along to any of our meetings and talk to us. Someone will let you have a go and we know you will love model yacht racing!

PARKING at the Rick pond for HCMYC members, Terry Gough (Head of Gardens & Estates, Historic Royal Palaces) advises us to point out to members "Unless we have been notified beforehand or the person(s) concerned exhibit written permission from the Palace, no-one, other than our members and visiting skippers/guests, are allowed to use our car park. Any such person should be so advised and, if they refuse to leave, they should be reported to the Palace Control Room (the telephone number is shown on our main noticeboard). Unattended cars/vans found in the car park that, after careful investigation, cannot be identified as belonging to members or other persons connected to the Club should also be reported to the Palace Control Room."

This site is designed, managed, and published for Hampton Court Model Yacht Club by Dennis Moss.
