IMPROVEMENTS AT THE
RICK POND. Work is due to start 1/04/10
on a significant improvement to the banks etc of the Rick Pond. The project entails
cutting back the yellow flag iris, which has migrated significantly into the pond, gravel
walkways around these in the water, as well as a gravel starting bank across
the top end of the lake in the water for free sailing starts towards the clubhouse. In
addition stones, rocks and other obstructions are to be removed and the significant
erosion formed inlets and bays infilled, to give a smoother outline locally. Start and
finish lines for free sailing are to be permanently marked with short posts.
On the land, grading at the SW end particularly, will facilitate entry into the water without fear of tripping or disappearing into a patch of alluvium and at the bottom end NE, the bankside will be returned to the previous flat grassy area, the favoured prevailing winds starting site.
The project has evolved, mindful of the ecology of the pond with its rich marginal planting and wildlife.
For radio sailing a timber faced staging is to be built in the present location, with water in front of it deep enough to launch RMs straight from the bank. The bay across which it will be formed will be backfilled and topped off in topsoil and turf to match the surrounding grass. A bench at the top end, which has been the scene of some accidents in the past, is to be moved back from the lake to allow free passage to groups of skippers focussing on their boats.
The work is proceeding with the blessing of the Historic Royal Palaces who recognise and value the heritage of model yachting on this lake which dates back to 1893, the year in which the home park was first opened to the public. HRP will be posting explanatory notices at the lake side.
Finally, none of this would be possible without the most generous offer of Chas Howe and Blaze Construction Ltd to undertake the project at no cost to the HCMYC or the HRP. Chas particular interest is in historic vessels both steam and sail with an important collection to match. We thank them.
We hope these works will benefit all aspects of sailing and look forward to renewed interest from a wider circle of sailors.
