1st Round of the 2009 PRACC series also the M & S District RA Championship, sailed Sunday 29th March.Skipper-group-web.jpg (257228 bytes)

Hampton Court MYC hosted the first of the 2009 PRACC series of races on the 29 March. This event attracted a record 30 skippers some of whom had travelled considerable distances to compete. The Briefing commenced promptly at 9.45 and it was a shame that the same could not be said about the wind. A postponement of racing to 10.25 was given whilst the race committee crossed their fingers hoping for the wind to fill in.

The fleet had been seeded into 3 heats and it took until 11.30 to complete the first race due to the very light and variable wind. Despite the conditions, the like of which is not often seen at Hampton Court, Brad Gibson, Graham Bantock and Clive Tappenden had won their seeding races.

The courses were kept reasonably simple but generally gave two windward legs, and in races 4, 5, and 6, when the wind had backed to a near SW direction, almost the full length of the Rick Pond. By 1.30 the wind speed increased to 6-9 mph but continued to regularly shift in direction anywhere between the South and West. The competitiveness of the A heat also intensified with the increase in breeze to the point that three A heat race starts were subject to general recall.

PRACC-1st-place.jpg (224922 bytes)Despite the very keen competition there was not one protest ashore and the racing was good mannered throughout. There was no doubt that when the wind did eventually fill in, Peter Wiles had demonstrated an excellent and consistent performance. All the top skippers had however, at least one poor race result probably due to the difficult conditions. Derek Priestly, sailing his Hardtack design performed noticeably better in the afternoon, when there was more wind, gaining a 2nd and a 3rd in the last races.

It was Peter Wiles’s consistently good performance which allowed him to win this, the first of the PRACC races and also become the M&S RA Champion. Brad Gibson sailing a Venom, lent to him for the event, came in second and it was a pleasure for the race committee to watch Brad pick his way through the fleet. Robert Walsh sailing a Lightened narrowly beat Graham Bantock, and took 3rd place.

Prizes for the first five skippers were awarded in the clubhouse by Hampton Court Secretary Laurie Bower. All prize winning skippers thanked Hampton Court on behalf of the visiting skippers for running the event.

Race Officer, Colin Trower concluded the proceedings by giving Derek Priestly and Robert Wash, both from Fleetwood MYC, chocolate treats in recognition of the distance which they had travelled.
