2010 Autumn Trophy for the 6 Metre Class,

sailed at Hampton Court MYC, 16-10-2010. report by David Bell

Hampton Court MYC played host for the third Autumn Trophy event. This trophy had previously been presented to the VMYG by Keyth Vass-Musson to encourage the racing of the 6 Metre class.

It was an overcast start to the day with a light to fresh North Easterly wind of varying direction. This gave the skippers a difficult start on the run from the clubhouse end. So typical from this end, the wind would veer around from the direction of the river and by half way down the lake it was almost a reach. This took a few attempts for some to master without any bank side adjustments. As the day progressed the wind stayed much the same and the promised sunshine failed to appear. This year 6 boats made it to the start line although one was delayed. Graham Reeves and John Newey from Bournville, Graham Wyeth, Mervyn Cook, Ray Hersee and Martin Bandey from Gosport and Alan Hill journeyed from Essex. John Gale, Anthony Warren and myself were from the host club. Further visitors also attended to watch, have a chat and help crew including a new member Des Hassell who with a very fine camera was press ganged into taking most of the attached pictures. Many thanks Des, it was nice to see a new face and hope we will see you at future events.

Boats Sailed

Graham Reeves & John Newey "Oberon" , Graham Wyeth "Dolphin", Martin Bandey "Rhona" , Alan Hill "Unknown Design", Mervyn Cook ‘Swan’, John Gale ‘limited edition’ Lewis design.

John Gale was sailing his Limited Edition design by John Lewis, built by John 16 years ago but amazingly first time on the water (must be a record). He was having tuning issues on the day but was keen to get the boat ready for the 6mtr Nationals later that Month. Graham Reeves was suffering from the effects of "Man Flu" so after a couple of boards he ran out of steam, John Newey took over as skipper and Graham sat and watched.

From the start of the race Graham Wyeth took control by winning his boards consistently, Mervyn Cook was also scoring well, considering he had borrowed a boat from John that morning he made good progress throughout the day. Martin Bandey with the oldest boat on the water was also doing well however there was a need for a bilge pump as an old split in the hull was letting in more water throughout the day. Alan Hill was delayed to the start line, sadly his health was slowing him down but with the help of Anthony Warren his boat joined the fleet and sailed the complete race. His boat was also suffering with minor breakages throughout the day but an early lunch break gave them time to do some emergency repairs.

Following a social lunch in the clubhouse the race continued with all boards completed. Graham was the most consistent throughout the day and won all boards except one run which made him a well deserved winner.
