District IOM team racing Championship on Sunday 7th March.

Frozen-lake.jpg (36827 bytes)Another cold day of our winter greeted the District IOM team racing championship event, but fortunately a bright breezy day, with a PRO’s dream wind - straight down the lake. The first job was to clear some thin ice from the lake edges which thankfully was easily done and quickly dispersed by the wind. By the briefing at 10.00 it had all gone.   Dave Andrews as PRO, welcomed the 15 skippers and outlined the specific rule differences that apply to team racing. An entry of 5 teams requires 10 races per schedule. We were determined to give skippers a good days sailing and to complete 2 schedules.

Briefing.jpg (52245 bytes)   The racing went well. The wind direction enabled a simple course but with sufficient long beats to enable some tactical sailing. The top suit breeze (sometimes on the limit) enabled brisk racing and we had completed the first schedule by 11.40. At this point Hampton Court(A) team were in the lead with 4 wins. Both 3 Rivers teams were in 2nd place. Lunch was not taken until we had completed 4 of the 2nd schedule races.

After a pleasant chatty lunch break in our clubhouse we continued with the remaining 6 races. Several more skippers changed into 2nd suit. John Male had done this earlier and it seemed to be beneficial, but overall proved to be unnecessary. The strong winds did overpower boats at times but on balance skippers in top rigs maintained an advantage over the smaller rigs. There was some tactical sailing, it was sometimes possible to sail an opposing boat off the course and when it worked, was most satisfying. In the 2nd schedule the fortunes of the Hampton Court (A) team took a tumble losing 3 of their 4 races, while the 3 Rivers (A) team won all 4 of theirs. The final outcome was a match win of 1 race by 3 Rivers (A).

We had had a thoroughly good day’s sailing. Team racing is great fun, and requires the least amount of organising of our inter club sailing. We should do more of it.

I would like to thank all those who helped, especially Dave Andrews as PRO, and to Tom Davies and David Mayne who turned up unexpectedly and became finishing order recorders. DGM
