clubs sailed in this, the first
race of the M & S District IOM Championship series. The weather disappointed, dull and
cold, after a lovely sunny day yesterday. Wind conditions for race 1 delighted the PRO
Laurie Bower. A 5-10mph wind virtually straight down our lake gave gentle starts, a long
windward beat, and time to manoeuvre round the buoys. But it did not last. By the second
race start at 10.30 the wind had got up and progressively veered NW, necessitating a major
course change to our worst configuration of short windward legs across the lake. These
changes, a rescue boat problem and a protest, delayed the racing and only 3 race pairs had
been completed by the lunch break. The start line in these wind 
conditions has to be almost parallel to the the south bank and made
crowded tricky starting. However racing continued a pace and in good humour. The top
places produced very close racing and the outcome was not certain until the last race.
Dave Andrews just made it by 1 point from Trevor Binks, with Chris Treagust and his
'Lintel' design yacht only a further point behind. This boat was very impressive in these
windier conditions, on a broad reach, it got up on a plane and flew! There were prizes for
the first 10 places and so a large percentage of the fleet went home happy. Laurie Bower
