Hampton Court MYC hosted the first of the Met and Southern District, One Metre Championship races on the 21 February. Following a heavy frost over the previous two nights the Rick Pond was covered by a substantial layer of ice, and at 9.30am the prospect of racing looked slim. Club members Peter Constable and Dave Andrews together with visiting helm Richard Wills, took it in turns to go out in the club dinghy and break up the ice. By 10.15am things were looking up when a gentle breeze came in from the West and the ice began to disappear.
Racing was postponed until 11am by which time the ice had all but gone and the wind had increased to 8mph. A total of 13 skippers remained keen to race and the numbers were such that they all sailed in one fleet. With the wind blowing straight down the lake, the fleet was sent on long windward legs when frequent place changes took place.
With a few races completed it became clear that the two Trevor's (Binks and Bamforth) were fighting it out for the top spot. Good performances were also put in by Chris Treagust and Richard Wills with some consistent sailing and Vernon Appleton managed some excellent starts down at the pin end.
In total, the fleet managed to complete 11 good races by the cut off time of 3pm and prizes for the first 5 skippers were later awarded in the clubhouse.
My thanks to all the skippers who persevered in the inclement conditions, and to my race team, Laurie Bower, Peter Constable, Dave Andrews, Wendy Moss, Geoffrey Jones, and Hans Nesser.Colin Trower PRO
