The RA St Georges Trophy and PRACC(12) race report.Dennis Moss

A cold and frosty morning greeted the 26 skippers from 14 clubs at our Hampton Court lake. The lake and park looked very picturesque in the early sunshine with a mist covering the water. However, and more seriously, there was little wind and it was well after the 10.00 start time that PRO Colin Trower was able to firm up the course. The wind now of a decent strength was from the NNE 1st-course.jpg (42689 bytes)which meant for the Rick Pond, a shorter than desirable, first beat. With 15 or so skippers in a fleet this meant that to achieve a win and not be caught up in the traffic, you had to be away from the line pretty smart or get a lucky lift. Skippers who achieved this more than most in the early races were Chris Harris, Peter Wiles, and Trevor Binks. A new feature to me in race management was for the finish line judges to blow a whistle when the leading boat crossed the line. I liked this, it provided a clear indication to skippers, and confirmed that the judges were in control

The event ran very smoothly, there were no unresolved protests and by the lunch break at 12.30, even after the delayed start, 4 race pairs had been completed. This event was both a new HCMYC open race for RA’s, and the last of the PRACC 2010 series. David Munro reported that he was delighted that this year had produced the closest contest for a season’s winner in the history of the PRACC series, and today’s result would decide whether it would be Peter Wiles or Derek Priestley taking home the cup.

At the lunch break Chris Harris was in the lead 2 pts ahead of Peter Wiles, and Derek Priestley was lagging a bit in 8th place. Chris’s boat ‘Pearl’, a very slim and lightweight boat seemed particularly suited to the 6-8mph winds of the morning.

After lunch the wind had veered more easterly the PRO was able to alter the course to give longer windward legs allowing hopefully 2nd-course.jpg (49828 bytes)more separation of boats at the critical buoys. Chris Harris continued his good form, but ‘Pearl’ was now in competition with the heavier boats which perhaps suited the strengthening wind better, and Derek Priestley was gaining position with every race completed. With the new course Peter Wiles confirmed his undoubted RA skills and stayed in first place for remaining races. By the cut-off at 16.00hrs, 9 race pairs had been completed and Peter Wiles was the clear winner of the St Georges Trophy with a score of only 11pts. The final results are shown above in the Full Results table. Prizes were presented to the leading skippers by our Club Secretary Laurie Bower. David Munro as PRACC secretary, then summarised the final 2010 results, and surprisingly Derek Priestley was the winner, which of course pleased Derek immensely. Linda Munro presented the cup to Derek, and engraved glass plaques were received by the best placed 2010 PRACC skippers.

Our PRO Colin Trower asked me to write this report, and he wants thank the 26 skippers who came (in many cases a very long way) and made our St George’s trophy meeting and PRACC(12) a great success. And of course he wants to particularly thank his Race Committee of Wendy Moss, Peter Constable, Terry Colson, Geoff Jones, Laurie Bower, and Dennis Moss, for the quiet (apart from the whistle) and efficient way they ran the days racing. We in turn want to thank him for taking on the role of PRO and giving up the opportunity of sailing himself.    Dennis Moss
