Freezing cold, no wind and the Rick iced all over to a
significant depth, saw the few stalwarts who
made it confined to the Club house, when not otherwise feeding desperate swans at the door
with mince pies. Snug inside, we were able to discuss the interesting boats which
nonetheless did arrive. Foremost of these was of course John Gales work on
considerably progressing Arthur Levisons hardwood, never completed A class. We last
saw her in August 2009 as illustrated; (shortly photographs will be available in her
progressed state).
John writes, The design is Serica 2, which is a modified Daniel's design by Arthur Levison. The all up design weight is 62lbs on a 57" lwl. The current weight is 56lbs - 44lbs of lead and 12lb hull weight, which is as light as I am prepared to carve the hull down to. The wood is utile which is quite a heavy density timber. Probably carved approximately 12lbs to 13lbs off it from the original blank.
We very much look forward to her taking to the water for this years Series and Cups.
At the other end of the scale we had a rare 1931 built for one year only, Tri-ang toy 16 yacht in lugger rig (looking like a gunter without jaws), complete with splendid box declaring her to be built by Skilled Racing Yacht Builders; also a beautiful war time Bassett Lowke Alexander yacht with timber spars, catalogue number R2, Heather Dew.
Harriet cycled once more from Wimbledon with boat trailer and newly acquired hardwood kit built Dragon thereupon. Discussion and advice centred around how to authentically re-rig her, whilst getting some performance from the little yacht.
We now look forward to an expanded free sailing season with the first race (for classic 6M) on 26 February 2011. Anthony Warren
